KAAMA A practical and theoretical aspect of Kaaama is
presented here. Word Kaama of Hindu mythology is translated as sex in English
language. Kaama is an integral part of everybody’s life. This is the highest
grade of bliss provided by God to every creature. But old as well as modern
thinkers say that this is not the highest bliss. One can go even higher. Take
for example Rajneesha who professed going towards trance starting from sex.
Every ancient society found ways and means to circumvent kaama to go to a
higher stage. Let us see what is the basis of all these concepts about kaama.
One can guess that every cell of the body is like a small magnet which
has got power to attract. In ordinary iron,
atoms are arranged in a haphazard way so that the axial direction of
the magnet becomes disordered. In disordered state, cells of different parts
of the body respond to different types of stimulations which is called sex.
Some cell respond to touch, some to pressure etc. When these atoms are made to
order by some means, it becomes a powerful magnet. There is a possibility that
our body cells also can be axially oriented like a powerful magnet or a
powerful ferroelectric material. It is supposed that naturally, they are
already aligned. The only requirement is that these should not get disturbed
by the intake of external material or food. This aim has been accomplished by
several means. There are reports about people who have controlled sex. They
are supposed to take their intake of food in a dry form as far as possible.
This is one way to disturb our own cells to a minimum extent. The second point
is that our breath should be able to touch the whole body, at least the sacrum
part. As soon as the intake of food becomes in excess, this connection is
lost. To regain this connection, yogis have prescribed postures upside down
and trying to drink air like water, to fill the stomach with air. If anyhow
kaama is controlled, then it is said that the consciousness develops to higher
stages.
Has the concept of magnet behind Kaama got some support from sacred
texts? Puraanic texts term Rati as the wife of Kaama. Rati in Sanskrit is
nothing but attraction.
As Dr. Fatah Singh has pointed out, the origin of vedic view of Kaama
lies in the hymn which says that eye should become the weight and Kaama should
become the vessel in which rice has to be de-husked or pounded. The word for
vessel is Uluukhalam. Normally, Uluukhalam is a wooden ware with it’s mouth
engraved to make it empty to fill un - husked rice in it. The rice pounded in
it is later used for sacrificial rituals. The word Uluukhalam is important.
This can be taken as Uruukaram, which means making wider, broader. As has been
pointed out above, Kaama has got this property of becoming broad like a
magnet. The pound has been called the eye. In the absence of practical
experience, only puraanic stories of Lord Shiva annihilating Kaama with his
third eye can be taken to it’s face value.
In Rigveda, Indra has been quoted as broadening Kaama with so many
types of wealth/vasu. The most important aspect of Kaama seems to have
appeared in a mantra which is generally recited at the time of receiving gift
or dakshina by priests. It says that who is giver, who is receiver. Neither I
am giving nor receiving. It is only Kaama who is giving and receiving. This
sort of affection is required while giving or receiving. This takes us towards
latest developments in information technology where this concept of giving and
receiving has been assimilated.
